Kartal Elderly Care Home
As part of the EU-funded R2CITIES Project, the Kartal Municipal Elderly Care Home and two residential blocks located in Yakacık underwent
comprehensive energy efficiency renovations. These upgrades included LED lighting systems, enhanced thermal insulation, solar panel installations,
and mechanical system improvements.
The project was implemented simultaneously in three pilot cities: Valladolid (Spain), Genoa (Italy), and Kartal (Turkey). For the Kartal site, an energy saving
target of 63% was set, with construction works commencing in 2016.
Supported by the European Union’s 7th Framework Programme, the initiative brought together 16 European partners to develop, test, and share scalable and sustainable energy solutions
for urban environments.
Project Data:
• Area: 20,500m²
• Bed Capacity: 500
• Multipurpose Hall: 1
• Conference Hall: 1
Key Achievements:
• Energy savings of up to 68% in Kartal and 50–53% in the other pilot cities
• Integration of BIM-based design and smart energy monitoring systems
• Application of advanced technologies such as heat pumps, high-performance insulation, solar energy systems, and intelligent building automation
• Successful replication of the model in additional buildings without the need for extra funding
Duration: 2016-2017
Our Design Scope
Our team was responsible for the complete MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing) design scope. All design works were carried out in accordance with international
BIM standards and developed through BIM-based interdisciplinary coordination throughout the design phases [LPh 5-9].
